Garuda Pilates Matwork was the homework of Pilates that involves a set of exercises done on the floor without assistance from a Pilates machine. It focuses on the movements and core muscles similar to that on a Pilates machine. All that is required is a yoga mat.

Garuda Matwork takes its name from an Indian mythological sacred bird that can change shape. It combines the spirituality, breath worth and asana practices of yoga, the core strength and focus of pilates and the balletic grace of dance.

It has all the benefits of a robust cardiovascular workout while stretching the mind as well as the body. Garuda is a test of mental strength as well as physical, demanding total concentration during the exercises.

For some people pilates matwork can also help with lower backpain. Mat classes are ideal for those people who have some experience of Pilates and can do a full roll up. This class is not suitable for chronic pain and some injuries.  Courses are taught on Mondays at 6.30pm.We sell passes in single £10 drop in or six week packages £48 so you can start when motivation strikes. Book as you go or a few weeks ahead to reserve a spot in your mat class.  Pre booking and payment required.

About 8 in 10 people have one or more bouts of low back pain.

In most cases, it is not due to a serious disease or serious back problem, and the exact cause of the pain is not clear. This is called nonspecific lower back pain. The usual advice is to keep active, and do normal activities as much as possible.  In most cases, the pain disappears within six weeks but may come back (recur) from time to time.

Garuda Clinical Pilates is not only for the injured but for those who want to build body awareness, improve posture, flexibility, strength and stamina.  Garuda Pilates can help get you back to feeling better quicker and also prevent further injuries, meaning that you’ll be back to your normal life quicker than you think. Garuda Clinical Pilates mat work is a level 1 class so designed for those who are pain free , it incorporates small props and is great for focusing on target areas of the body. Our classes are in small groups and cater both for beginners and mixed ability.

Chronic (persistent) pain develops in some cases and further treatment may then be needed. Clinical Pilates is taught by an STOTT ISP (injury-specialist populations) teacher or an APPI physio trained teacher.
